Vimal Chandran’s illustrations : an unconventional take on the current world.
Vimal Chandran is an Indian Visual artist who lives and works out of Bangalore, India. His latest series of work is a thought provoking political satire that also keenly focuses on social introspection. His work reflects the absurdity of modern society while challenging the inherent social structure around us. He invites the audience to contemplate on the social and political life of the new age society.
In one of his works, Mahatma Gandhi’s famous Dandi March has been given a twist by incorporating social media addiction of the modern society accompanied by the quote “The revolution will be instagrammed”.
“Social Pressure” is another theme Mr. Chandran has explored . One of the illustrations literally shows a boy forced to sit inside a pressure cooker by the hand of society. Other illustrations under this theme showcases the struggle to fit into societal norms & standards.
Though Mr. Chandran explores the middle class absurdity specifically in the Indian context but it also resonates with the conditions globally.
His works also question the political system around us and gives the viewer an option to contemplate on the corrupt systems and propagandas .
His recent illustration on Covid 19 scenario , he introspects the current lockdown situation with an ironic satire of the pre-covid world.
Vimal Chandran’s other illustrations are also extremely popular on social media and his series ‘Unposted Letters’ are usually painted in a warm and surreal tone that connects with a wide range of audience . His illustration style is simple, using minimal colors, yet the conceptualisation of his work does not fail to leave the viewer mesmerised.
Vimal Chandran is a self taught artist and according to him “ My work is inspired from the world around us, as an artist I am trying to understand it a bit more deeper” .
